Pedro is the brother of Angela Vicario. His twin brother Pablo is the more sensitive one out of the two. Pedro used to serve the police patrol, and “had matured his tendency to command” (68); thus he is more tough and serious in comparison with Pablo. Being the more forceful and authoritarian brother, Pedro established the need to kill Santiago Nasar in order to redeem his sister’s honor. However, before the killing, Pedro displays the act of delaying the murder. At a point he even said that “he was in no condition to kill anybody”(70) as though he was about to quit. His older twin, Pablo pushed him along and in the end they committed the crime and revenged for their sister. Although the twins were together throughout the story, and yet the memory they had of the day seem to contradict.
Significance of name in work
The name Pedro symbolizes a stone or a rock. It originates from the Peter. In the Bible, Peter was known to be Jesus’ favorite disciple. He was the leader of the 12 other apostles but when Jesus was crucified, he denied Jesus three times before the rooster crowed. Pedro, like the meaning of his name, has a tough personality. Although he is not the eldest son, he possesses the authority to command his brother. A few hours before the murder, Pedro acts reluctant to perform the killing. This is like Peter’s personality change, where he was once the most favored disciple but later on he denies the lord. It is ironic for a rock symbolizes firm and concrete, and yet both Peter and Pedro display weakness within them despite their tough outlook.
